About the Book

This book, “Coastal Hazards and Mitigation”, is designed to serve as a comprehensive academic and practical guide for students, researchers, and professionals dealing with coastal hazard assessment, policy development, and mitigation strategies. It addresses both theoretical concepts and real-world applications to prepare readers for the multifaceted challenges posed by coastal disasters.

The book is organized into five key units, each focusing on a specific domain of coastal hazard science and management:

Unit I – Introduction This unit lays the foundation by introducing readers to environmental and human-induced hazards. It explores the distinctions between natural and man-made disasters and elaborates on key concepts such as hazard, vulnerability, disaster resilience, and coping mechanisms. The aim is to build a strong conceptual base before diving into more specialized topics.

Unit II – Coastal Hazards Focusing specifically on coastal zones, this unit examines various natural hazards including tsunamis, cyclones, earthquakes, storm surges, coastal erosion, floods, and sea-level rise. It also introduces technological hazards and discusses their causes, impacts, and responses. Readers will gain insights into early warning systems and mitigation strategies essential for managing these events.

Unit III – Law and Policy This unit provides a detailed look at the legal and policy frameworks governing disaster management in India. It covers the evolution of disaster response policies, the institutional mechanisms in place, and the role of enabling institutions and inter-agency coordination in effective disaster management.

Unit IV – Adaptation and Mitigation Here, the focus shifts to proactive measures. This unit discusses adaptation strategies including sectoral adaptations, community-based planning, and the use of indigenous knowledge in disaster risk reduction. Important national frameworks such as the NDMA guidelines are examined to highlight structured approaches to disaster preparedness and resilience-building.

Unit V – Case Studies The final unit brings theory to life through detailed case studies of real-world disasters such as the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami, the Latur earthquake, the Gaja cyclone (2018), and others. These case studies serve as practical learning modules, illustrating both vulnerabilities and effective mitigation practices. They also offer lessons in community response, institutional action, and the challenges of post-disaster recovery.

This book aims not only to fulfill academic requirements but also to inspire a deeper understanding of and engagement with coastal risk management. It encourages readers to approach disaster mitigation not merely as a technical challenge but as a multidisciplinary, community-centered responsibility.
