Abstract

Traditional teaching and learning approaches are being revolutionised by the growing significance of artificial intelligence (AI) integration in higher education institutions. Artificial intelligence’s quick development in higher education has changed classrooms and opened up new avenues for individualised instruction, improved research, and more efficient administration. However, despite its increasing adoption, there remains a lack of comprehensive understanding regarding its effectiveness, accessibility, and impact on students’ learning experiences. Moreover, while AI provides numerous advantages, it also presents challenges such as data privacy concerns, ethical implications, and the risk of over-reliance on technology. The problem arises when students either lack awareness or face difficulties in effectively using AI for academic purposes. Additionally, institutions may struggle to implement AI-driven solutions equitably, leading to disparities in access and learning outcomes. In this point of view, this study aimed to investigate the role of AI in Higher Education Institutions in Erode. This study is based on descriptive research method. A structured questionnaire has been developed and spread among population to collect primary data from students of Higher Education Institutions in Erode whereas a Likert scale is employed to measure students’ utilization of AI Technology in their education. The sample size has consisted of 102 students who selected by using a random sampling technique. The researchers collected information regarding AI usage profile and reasons for utilizing AI technology whereas secondary data are obtained from journals, research papers, and website of higher education institutions. The statistical tools namely frequency distribution, percentage analysis and mean score ranking are used for data analysis. The analysis mentioned that students primarily use AI for academic purposes, with improved research and academic writing followed by exam preparation and assessment support.
