Dermatoglyphics and Blood Groups Research Activity: From Zoology Laboratory Learning to Scientific Publication

Introduction

During an undergraduate Zoology practical laboratory session, a group of 17 female students initially expressed apprehension about performing the blood smear practical, as they were concerned about the finger-prick procedure required to prepare their own blood smear slides.

To help reduce anxiety and increase confidence, Dr. B.Govindarajan, Assistant Professor, Department of Zoology, explained the educational significance of the practical exercise and introduced the concept of a research-based learning activity. Students were informed that, with their voluntary participation, the observations collected during the laboratory session could contribute to a scientific study examining the relationship between dermatoglyphic (fingerprint) patterns and ABO/Rh blood groups.

After understanding the academic purpose of the activity and receiving appropriate guidance, the students willingly participated in preparing their blood smear slides, observing blood cells under a light microscope, and recording fingerprint patterns. The practical session became an engaging learning experience, allowing students to develop confidence in laboratory techniques while gaining exposure to scientific research methods.

With the assistance of Mr. S.Muthuraj, the collected data were organized and analyzed, and the findings were later published in the International Journal of Current Science Research (IJCSR) .

This presentation was shared with students before the practical session to strengthen their understanding of blood cells, immune cell morphology, and light microscopy, enabling them to participate more confidently in the laboratory activity.
